A thousand dollars is not as much as it used to be.

Many people's rent and mortgage are many times more than that. Even still many people still cannot handle a $1,000 emergency in their life.

So if you’re in an emergency, or are trying to prepare for one you may need to make $1,000 or more fast.

Here are some ways you can do that in less than a month.

Sign On Bonus

Sign on bonuses for new jobs used to be something that only high level jobs paid out. Now though, almost every company has sign-on bonuses for working for them.

Places like Taco Bell have even offered sign on bonuses of $1,000.

You may not want to switch jobs, but in truth the best way to increase your pay at times is to switch to a new job, especially if they offer that sign on bonus.

There will be some requirements, such as you have to stay with that company for a set amount of years, but if you need money fast and a company you could work for is offering that much or more as a sign on bonus, then it may be a good fit to switch to a new company and get that sign on bonus.

Get A Second Job

If switching jobs is not an option for you, could you possibly get a second job? If you work 40 hours a week you have 72 hours left in your week, after getting 8 hours of sleep a night. Could you maybe work 20 or more of those hours to make extra money?

If you can’t get a second job, does your current job offer some overtime?

This is a short term thing, so if you are struggling with deciding to do it, then have a deadline of how long you are going to do this second job. If you only need so much money, or want to save up a certain amount of money, then decide how long you will do it.

If it will take 6 months, and you know you’ll have to work hard for just 6 months, it can go a long way to helping you move forward.

Start A Side Hustle

If getting another W2 job is not for you, you may want to consider getting a side hustle, preferable one that you can make money with quick.

Things like rideshare driving or delivery through apps like Uber, Lyft, Instacart, DoorDash or GrubHub can get you from sign up to taking your first rides, to cashing out sometimes in less than 24 hours.

When done right you can make between $13 and $30 an hour depending on your market and how well you learn it.

Another great side hustle you could start is taking scrap to sell it. There are a lot of people just throwing things out, if you have a truck or even better a trailer you can load up what people have thrown away, washers, dryers, old windows with aluminum frames, etc. and take them to a scrap yard. You will walk away that day with cash.

Have A Garage Sale

We all have storage sheds, garages, attics, or just under our beds full of things we don’t use. If you need money, and need it fast, selling it in a garage sale is a great option.

You can, and should get some stickers to price things, but if you want to save your $3 you can just answer all day “How much is this?”, to me it’s worth the $3 to get a pack of stickers.

Selling everything you own may sound desperate, and it can be, but most of the time we all have a lot of things we aren’t using, and having the money for it is a lot better than holding on to stuff.

Get A Loan

Depending on the type of emergency you’re in you could pay for it on a credit card. Even if you can’t pay for something with anything other than cash, a lot of credit cards will actually let you get cash out of between $500 and $2,000 depending on your limit and what your credit card allows.

This is typically a really high interest rate though so plan it in a way that you’ll be able to get it paid off quickly.

You can also get a traditional loan through a bank using your house or even car as collateral, or even an unsecured loan if you have neither of those. Again with no collateral the interest will be higher so keep that in mind.

If you aren’t able to get a loan in any traditional way, asking friends and family may be the only solution left.

When doing so, I recommend that you have something in writing explaining the terms of the loan. It doesn’t have to be notarized or anything, but just something in writing so everyone knows what to expect.

It’s not needed, but if something comes up and you can’t pay it when you thought you could, having something in writing will make everyone comfortable, and you can always explain to friends and family that it will take longer.

Be Prepared For An Emergency

Having an emergency fund is the first and most important step to getting your finances in order.

With these ways of making $1,000 you can quickly and easily build it, or you can cover whatever your current emergency is.

Once you’ve got past it though, don’t just call it done, make sure you save up for the next emergency to hit, because it will happen. So be ready.
